A 5 day course to introduce bronze casting in sand hi, I'm Stewart. I'll be teaching bronze casting at HSAD this summer. Casting molten metal into sand has been around for hundred of years, but it's not often experienced outside an industrial environment. This is a photo from Taylor and Fenn in USA. A typical pouring area in a foundry is a scary place to visit. I In Haliburton this summer, we will be learning the basics of creating a 'pattern', or original model for casting. I will supply designs, but you can make your own in Sculpey or other materials in a short time. I will do all the scary stuff with molten metal, a safe distance from students. Here I am pouring a small mould. It still amazes me how quickly we can go from an idea to a solid bronze artefact, polished and permanent. I will be starting the class on the first day, going through the entire process in less than an hour.

Bronze Casting on a small scale, a 5 day course.
Metal casting into sand can yield amazing results, but the technique requires some understanding of how molds are made. To get from concept to casting there is patternmaking, or model making, which can be as simple as scratches into a surface or as complex as multi-piece tools that take many hours to make. In this course we will look at pattern design, working with hot metal and special sand, and finishing the newly cast metal.
